Have you had a song stuck in your head for a while (that you don’t want), you’ve listened to it on the radio or TV and then you find yourself singing it sometimes multiple times a day? Hit the metaphoric Pause button (I’ll go into how this will help you feel good in your skin in the 3 tips later…)
One of the most significant things in my life to day has been potty training for Emme, my 2 year old. For some reason she has resistance to the potty when I ask her to go, so I found a show on Netflix that is about a tiger who can talk and in one of the episodes goes to the potty like kids do.
In this show there is a song about how to go to the potty and I’ve been showing her the episode everyday for the past week. This song was stuck in my head and I’ve found myself humming it driving the car, in the shower, whilst I’m making dinner and not even realising it until a few minutes after I’m singing or humming it.
The reason I share this with you is because the problem is the story or song that you play about your body, confidence and food dramatically impacts and influences how you feel about yourself.
This then has an impact on your stress levels, the ability to flow with challenges and overall enjoyment (or lack of enjoyment) of your life.
What I’m talking about is self-talk the unconscious conversation going on that is hard on you, bitchy, sad, can be depressed, can steal your thunder or even sabotage your success.
• I know I should be eating healthier yet I just can’t seem to do it
• I know I want to exercise yet I don’t get to the gym because other things just come up
• Or how about the ol’ I couldn’t be bothered its too hard and I’ve already tried and failed.
Do you enjoy listening to that song or self talk or isn’t time to change it to something you enjoy?
Let me be clear its not your fault that the self talk is playing. It has come about as a result of hearing messages repeatedly and being influenced as a child and young adult.
Here’s what to do instead are 3 tips to changing the self talk that you are playing of your body, confidence or food to something you want to hear that feels good:
Tip #1 Be aware of what you’re playing and pause it
Intend to be conscious of your self-talk, of the voice that isn’t nice and a downright bitch at times, just acknowledge and notice it when it comes up.
Tip #2 Write it out!
Take some time to get creative and write the words in colours that you feel best express the negativity, there is no wrong or right just make it up. Do this for as long as it feel necessary, minimum 5 minutes, then rip it up and let go of it where in belongs (in the recycling/rubbish depending where you are in the world).
Tip #3 Shake it out!
Use movement and sound to help you release the words to your favourite song and feel the self talk that you don’ want moving out of your hands like you are shaking off water.
Bonus Tip #4 Rest and relax
Once you do either tip 3 or 4 give yourself a few minutes to appreciate your body for all it does for you.
